What's the difference between a 1:1 and a 1:2 mix ratio?
1:1 (equal parts color and developer) is the standard ratio most permanent and demi-permanent color lines are formulated for. 1:2 (double the developer) is used for high-lift formulas, which need the extra developer volume and dilution to achieve significant lift beyond what a standard formula can do.
Why does the amount change with hair length?
Longer hair has more surface area to cover, so it needs more total product to saturate every strand from root to end. The base amounts here reflect typical full-head, single-process quantities — short (around 40 g), medium (around 60 g), and long (around 90 g) — but very thick or dense hair may need more regardless of length.
What if I mix too little or too much?
Mixing too little risks running out mid-application, leaving some sections under-processed or unevenly saturated. Mixing too much simply wastes product, since leftover mixed color can't be saved once developer is added — it starts oxidizing immediately. It's generally safer to mix slightly more than you estimate you'll need.
Does the ratio change based on the color brand?
